Power of the Herd
Program for adult survivors of trauma
Trauma can often rob a person of their feeling of safety and personal power. Without adequate self-regulation skills, survivors can find it difficult to keep memories of the trauma from interfering with their daily lives, including experiencing nightmares, flashbacks, and hyper-vigilance. The Power of the Herd program provides opportunities for survivors to connect, support and guide one another while engaging in individual and group activities designed to help participants practice the skills necessary to remain relaxed and regulated during new and challenging situations. Participants learn how these skills are necessary for both handling horses and overcoming their own traumatic experiences.

Sexual trauma survivors can struggle with guilt, shame, and a sense of powerlessness. The traumatic stress can affect many aspects of life, including relationships, self-confidence, and personal boundaries. The Healing Herd program offers participants opportunities to practice establishing and maintain appropriate boundaries, reclaim their power, and rebuild their confidence in the safety of a supportive group environment. Through individual and group activities, participants learn to regulate their emotional energy and trust their ability to overcome conflicts and obstacles while feeling effective and safe.

Leader of the Herd
Workshop for foster and adoptive parents of traumatized children
As prey animals, horses are a lot like traumatized children; their survival depends on heightened awareness and knowing who to trust. That’s why working with horses offers a great opportunity for practicing parenting skills that are critical to developing a sense of safety and creating a healthy, healing home environment for foster and adoptive children who have survived trauma. Parents learn and practice essential skills for managing challenging, trauma-based behaviors.
Parents/caregivers of foster and/or adoptive children who have experienced trauma
One 3-hour session

Stable Life
Program for adolescents in foster care
Young people in the foster care system often feel lonely, afraid, powerless, and angry. Most temporary and even long-term peer group members simply cannot relate to the particular challenges these teens face. The Stable Life program is designed to build resiliency using engaging, meaningful equine-assisted learning activities that teach self-management and social skills. Teens learn and practice essential skills for creating the lives they want now and successfully transitioning into adulthood.

Joining the Herd
Program for adopted adolescents
There are thoughts and questions that adopted kids have about their past that kids in biological nuclear families don’t have, and probably wouldn’t understand. The Joining the Herd program provides an opportunity for adopted teens to connect, support, and guide one another while engaging in challenging individual and group activities designed to teach and strengthen psychological, occupational, and social skills. Participants learn and practice skills relating to self-regulation, problem solving, conflict management, nurturing healthy relationships, and working as part of a team.

Horse Power
Program for at-risk adolescents
Teens with social skill deficits and/or histories that include exposure to, or experience of, traumatic events are often identified as “at risk.” Many of these teens are placed in residential care or attend day treatment programs to provide intensive psychological and behavioral support. The Horse Power program, based on the principles of Positive Youth Development, uses engaging equine-assisted learning activities and experiences designed to help at-risk adolescents begin or continue the process of recovery from trauma, acquire the skills to fulfill psychosocial needs in constructive ways, establish and maintain satisfying interpersonal relationships, and interact more successfully with society.
